Description
Fat in the liver, without inflammation or liver damage, is known as "fatty liver". Fat in the liver is not normal, but fat alone probably causes little harm or permanent damage.
A liver disease called noalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) can be a severe condition in which fat in the liver is accompanied by inflammation and damage. NASH can lead to cirrhosis, which permanently damages and scars the liver and may result in the liver no longer functioning properly.
Some of the most important steps a person with fatty liver can take include losing weight (if overweight or obese), a eating balanced and healthy diet, increasing physical activity, and avoiding alcohol.
