PROCEDURE:

The test is performed in the Endoscopy Unit at the hospital.

The procedure does not cause any pain. The actual manometer used for the test is the size of a IV tubing and is very flexible.

You will be sitting upright for the test.

The tube is lubricated to allow safe and easy passage into one of your nostrils and you will be asked to swallow the tube as if it is a long string of spaghetti. The tube will pass through the esophagus and into the stomach.

The physician or nurse will than pull back the tube, one cm at a time, monitoring the pressures on a computer screen. You will be asked to swallow at intervals, in order that the relaxation and contraction of the esophagus can be monitored.

The total test time is 30-45 minutes.

The results of the test are analyzed by Dr. Bologna, who will make any necessary recommendations to your referring physician. Your referring physician will continue to manage your care.

If you have any questions regarding the test, you may call the Endoscopy Unit at 248.964.5122, or you may call the office at one of the numbers listed above.
